Saldana In Nina

1 min read

Star Trek‘s Zoë Saldana will be playing singer Nina Simone in Nina.

Nina is based on Simone’s 1992 I Put a Spell on You autography.

Simone was a singer-songwriter who was also a civil rights activist in the 1960s. She recorded more than forty albums during her career, beginning with Little Girl Blue (1958). Most of her albums were released between 1958 and 1974.

Nina has been in the works since 2010, with Mary J. Blige originally slated to take on the role of Simone. Funding difficulties led to her departure.

Written by Cynthia Mort, the movie now has funding and will begin shooting in Los Angeles on October 16.
