And if you look in some even stranger corners of the United States, you might even find people with such enormously heavy political chips on their shoulders as to be able to find a metaphor for current events in a bad DS9 episode from 20 years ago.

Everyone's definition of "backwards" is different...some people would probably find you extremely backwards. In reality, there is nothing new under the sun...so backwards is kind of an inaccurate term.

If you look right in the United States, you will find clusters of extremely backwards political and religious groups who would like to take the country back to the 1700s. No unions, child labor laws, women's rights, etc. and a fiendish Biblical literalism are the visible hallmarks. Some of them are running for president and they bring their own Dal'Rok boogeymen in gays, foreigners, Muslims, even "uppity" black people. The DS9 ep certainly wasn't one of the best, but it could serve as a warning to the nation today.

Now before I make my comment I wish to remind anyone reading it that I actually like Move Along Home... I find the episode nearly unwatchable. If it weren't for the development of the O'Brien/Bashir relationship and the first inkling of the man Nog will become I would probably not even bother re-watching it.

I agree, horrible episode, almost as bad as Meridian, which I think is DS9's worst hour.
