Details about J.J. Abrams‘s Super 8 have been few and far between, but fans interested in the movie that will be released on June 10 got to see a thirty-second commercial for it during last night’s Super Bowl.
If Abrams had his way, details would stay under wraps, but he realized that with plenty of competition from other movies this summer, it was time to open up a bit. “Look, I feel we need a little bit of a coming-out party because we are up against massive franchises and brands and most people don’t know what Super 8 means,” Abrams said. “We’re a complete anomaly in a summer of huge films … and we don’t want to be so silent or coy that people don’t care or don’t hear about it.”

Amongst the casting decisions Ron Surma had to make, were finding suitable actors and actresses for the roles of the Borg Queen and Seven of Nine as well as finding a captain for Star Trek: Enterprise.
Alice Krige wasn’t available to reprise her role of the Borg Queen, and Surma had to find someone to do the job as well as Krige had done. “Alice wasn’t available and we had to find somebody else, and Susanna was really the only other choice for the role,” said Surma. “But that was not easy, for Susanna to come in and do that. Alice had set such a high standard and I think Susanna matched it.”

Before we see the characters we grow to love on the Star Trek series and movies, they have to be cast. From Star Trek: The Next Generation on, that job belonged in part to Ron Surma.
Working with Junie Lowry-Johnson, Surma cast “everybody who spoke. We’d meet with them,” he said, “and we’d have the people we picked then meet with the producers and the director of that particular episode. And we had to move fast because we basically had about five days per episode.”
